Before we start, I have to apologize to my friend and fellow critic Josh Hylton, who had the misfortune of sitting in front of me and hearing me scream (yes, Josh, three times) at our screening of Silent House.  It’s not my fault, though; directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau create such a thickly spooky atmosphere where you can’t help but be startled by a slamming door or an unexpected ghost sighting, at the very least.  However, Silent House seems like one of those movies that burns all of its eagerly-built goodwill with an unsatisfying ending – the type of ending that makes the film not make any physical sense whatsoever.
(If you’ve seen Alexandre Aja’s High Tension, you’ll know what I mean.)
