2015 Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival Wrap Up

As Halloween officially finds itself in our rearview mirror, I figured I’d revisit one of my favorite festivals to attend each year, which is the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival.  Celebrating its ten year, the horror festival has become a staple event (especially for me, see Tweet) at AFI Silver-in recent years-during the month of October.

2015 Awesome Con EXCLUSIVE: C.W. Prather Talks Spooky Movie International Film Festival

To those movie fans that reside in the metropolitan area (DC, MD, & VA) of the nation’s capitol, its no secret that the city plays host to a few unique, niche film festivals, each year.  For me, one of the most enjoyable of these festivals is undoubtedly the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival.  Founded by director C.W. 2014 Spooky Movie International Film Fest EXCLUSIVE: Director Mike Cramer Talks TEENAGE GHOST PUNK

Closing up the 2014 Spooky Movie Film Fest, I gave another unexpected gem a whirl with the festival selection, TEENAGE GHOST PUNK.  Written and directed by Mike Cramer, the film follows a family who, after moving into a creaky house just outside Chicago, find themselves being haunted by a charismatic teenage punk rocker and his eclectric group of … Continue reading “2014 Spooky Movie International Film Fest EXCLUSIVE: Director Mike Cramer Talks TEENAGE GHOST PUNK”

2014 Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival EXCLUSIVE: Screenwriter Jimmy George Talks CALL GIRL OF CTHULHU

Last week I had a chance to check out the local horror film festival known only as the Spooky Movie International Film Festival.  Hosted by AFI in Silver Spring, the festival this year boasted a number of impressive horror entries, some of which saw the return of a few directors (from prior years).  However, aside from the returning filmmakers, there were (of course) newcomers as … Continue reading “2014 Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival EXCLUSIVE: Screenwriter Jimmy George Talks CALL GIRL OF CTHULHU”

MOVIE REVIEW: GUT

If my friend became obsessed with a mysterious DVD that showed up in his mailbox, a potentially authentic depiction of a woman being eviscerated, I might be inclined to part ways with him, at the very least. I’m just saying. Gut begins by creating a prickly sense of unease, but weighs itself down with unnecessary … Continue reading “MOVIE REVIEW: GUT”

MOVIE REVIEW: The American Scream

2009‘s Best Worst Movie showed us that director Michael Stephenson could make a relevant, widely appealing documentary out of some pretty obscure subject matter. That film, his first as a director, chronicled the making of a cult horror phenomenon called Troll 2, a so-bad-it’s-good 1990 B-movie in which he also ‘acted’, and one that needs … Continue reading “MOVIE REVIEW: The American Scream”

Spooky Movie Festival: 10 questions with GUT co-star Sarah Schoofs

On Tuesday night, I had a chance to sit down with Sarah Schoofs, co-star of the moody horror/thriller Gut, which was showcased at this year’s Spooky Movie Festival. The film, written and directed by Elias (Dead Sucks), explores some pretty creepy stuff, particularly the fragile boundary between curiosity and psychosis. Sarah was down from … Continue reading “Spooky Movie Festival: 10 questions with GUT co-star Sarah Schoofs”

SPOOKY FEST 2012 – Movie Review: Ninjas Vs. Monsters, directed by Justin Timpane

There’s way too much going on in Ninjas Vs. Monsters for its modest budget, but you can’t deny writer/director Justin Timpane’s resolve, not to mention his ability, to bulldoze limitations. He does, after all, manage to sustain over 90 minutes of nonstop fighting, carnage and supernatural shenanigans that ended up requiring something like 400 special FX shots to … Continue reading “SPOOKY FEST 2012 – Movie Review: Ninjas Vs. Monsters, directed by Justin Timpane”

Spooky Movie Festival: An interview with Justin Timpane, director of Ninjas Vs. Monsters

A few hours before Ninjas Vs. Monsters had its World Premiere at the AFI Silver on Sunday night for the 2012 Spooky Movie Horror Film Festival, I was able to make the acquaintance of writer/director Justin Timpane, a fellow native of Montgomery County, MD, who was also about to participate in a discussion panel with several other local … Continue reading “Spooky Movie Festival: An interview with Justin Timpane, director of Ninjas Vs. Monsters”

SPOOKY FEST 2012 – MOVIE REVIEW: EXCISION, written and directed by Richard Bates, Jr.

Opening night of the Spooky Movie Horror Film Festival kicked off with Excision, Richard Bates Jr’s expansion of his own 2008 short film, a morbid twist on the plight of an outcast teenage girl (to say the least) who is misunderstood on just about every level. AnnaLynne McCord plays Pauline, a bizarre, frumpy highschool senior … Continue reading “SPOOKY FEST 2012 – MOVIE REVIEW: EXCISION, written and directed by Richard Bates, Jr.”

MOVIE REVIEW: V/H/S

Hmmmm…. an exclusively ‘found footage’ horror anthology. There’s an interesting concept. Like many compilations of its genre, V/H/S is hit or miss; sometimes it’s delightfully disturbing, and other times it feels recycled and uninspired. Consisting of five tales shot in the POV style (and an ultimately disappointing ‘wraparound’ story), it’s a mixed bag that feels a little … Continue reading “MOVIE REVIEW: V/H/S”

Just the Ticket for Horror Fans: SPOOKY MOVIE 2012 Announces its Full Schedule

If you’re a horror buff like me, a lifelong fascination with the macabre is probably one of those traits you wouldn’t immediately bring up at a dinner party. Regardless, you spent countless hours of your impressionable youth warping your sensibilities, and for a select few, molding your futures (for better or worse). That’s right – … Continue reading “Just the Ticket for Horror Fans: SPOOKY MOVIE 2012 Announces its Full Schedule”
